〈他想要天國的綢緞〉

假如我有天國的錦緞，

繡滿金光和銀光，

那用夜和光和微光

織就的藍和灰和黑色的錦緞，

我將把它們鋪在你腳下：

但我很窮，只有夢；

我把我的夢鋪在你腳下；

輕輕踩啊，因為你踩的是我的夢。

Enwrought with golden and silver light,

The blue and the dim and the dark cloths

Of night and light and the half-light,

I would spread the cloths under your feet:

But I, being poor, have only my dreams;

〈他想要天國的綢緞〉收於1899年出版的詩集《蘆葦間的風》，相當清新而浪漫。貧窮的詩人說他無法用諸般天光為愛人編織地毯，只能舖下自己的夢，讓愛人行走其上。窮人的夢或許脆弱，但其充滿憧憬的色澤應可媲美華麗的「天國的錦緞」。此詩讓人想起普契尼歌劇《波西米亞人》中詩人的詠嘆調：「我雖然窮困，卻富有詩句與愛，說到夢想、遐想和空中樓閣，我的心有如百萬富翁……」。
